Mastering the 360 Mindset: Why True Financial Clarity Starts with Perspective
We live in a world full of financial advice, yet many people still struggle to make decisions that truly align with their values. In the first episode of Mastering the 360 Mindset, host Jon Meyer, CFP®, introduces a philosophy that helps cut through the noise and bring your financial life into focus. It is not about chasing returns or finding the next big thing. It is about taking a step back to see the full picture.
From Politics to Purpose
Jon’s path into financial planning was anything but traditional. After college, he found himself managing a Burger King before realizing the food service industry was not his calling. Later, while fundraising for a political campaign, he discovered something important: He loved talking about money and helping people reach their goals.
That experience led him into financial services, where he realized the key difference between simply helping clients and leading them toward a meaningful destination. For Jon, leadership in this context means guiding people through complexity and narrowing their focus to the few things that truly matter.
With so much information available online, most people struggle to filter what is relevant. Jon believes that real progress comes from identifying the two or three actions that truly move the needle toward your goals.
The 360 Mindset: Health, Wealth, and Time
At the core of Jon’s philosophy is what he calls the 360 Mindset, a way of thinking that connects health, wealth, and time. Too often, people focus on the numbers without considering how their financial choices affect their well-being and lifestyle.
Jon challenges the idea that financial success is only about accumulating assets. Instead, he encourages people to think about how their resources support a fulfilling life. A 360 mindset helps you evaluate each decision in context, balancing the practical side of money with the emotional and physical aspects of living well.
Lessons in Integrity and Generational Planning
Jon shares a personal story from his childhood that shaped his perspective on money and integrity. When he was caught taking a candy bar without paying for it, his father, a small business owner, did not punish him with anger. Instead, he used it as a teaching moment, reminding Jon that people work hard for what they have and that respect and effort go hand in hand.
That simple lesson stayed with Jon throughout his career. It influences how he approaches his clients, emphasizing responsibility, honesty, and long-term thinking.
He also recalls a meaningful story from his practice, when he encouraged a client to include her children in an estate planning conversation. That single decision created understanding and trust that now extends across three generations. It is a reminder that true planning is not just about numbers on a page. It is about connection, communication, and legacy.
Why Time Comes First
When asked which element of the 360 Mindset matters most, health, wealth, or time, Jon’s answer might surprise you. He believes time comes first. Money can buy many things, but it cannot buy time back.
He references the book Die with Zero, which suggests that the ideal time to enjoy your wealth often comes earlier than you think. For many, the peak intersection of health and financial stability occurs in their 50s, yet people often delay experiences until later in life. Jon’s message is clear: Do not wait too long to enjoy the results of your hard work.
Planning for the future is essential, but so is giving yourself permission to live today.
